Graduation is a day that makes all the late nights staying up late to complete your assignments pay off. The second you begin the walk up to the stage to receive your diploma, that sense of accomplishment and relief is almost overwhelming. Each moment of that day is burned into the memory of every student, along with that of their families and friends. The convocation of Inuvik’s East Three Secondary School happened on June 1st, 2019.

Last year’s event was a huge success thanks to the community sponsors and participants with over 200 runners and walkers participating and $5050 raised for charity. Each year, the Fun Run chooses a different charity to be the benefactor of funds raised from sponsorship of the Fun Run. This years’ recipient was the Youth Of Today Society - a youth organization that supports youth business, media arts education and much more! The theme for Law Day 2019 was ‘Celebrating Language Rights’.

Carcross, YT, 2019.

Over the past few months the Shākāt Team traveled to a number of different communities to collect stories from youth all around the territory. We were struck by their creativity and unique perspectives on life in the Yukon. It was a great day as we proceeded with our workshops. The students grabbed cameras and microphones and ran around recording journalism students interviewing an Elder and music students writing and performing a song. We were happy to see that they got right into it as they wanted to work with us and complete the project.

We were struck by their creativity and unique perspectives on life in the Yukon. We had an amazing adventure visiting the farthest North community. A small town of unique architecture and history, with temperatures well below zero and welcoming locals. We got invited to go for a hunt with local Elders, had we stayed a bit longer. The students were shy at first but wormed up as the day went along learning about photography, video, writing and songwriting.
